How the Navy PRT is scored
The Physical Readiness Test (PRT) is taken twice per year . spring and fall . and measures Sailors across three events: push-ups, plank, and a cardio event. Each event is scored individually and combined into an overall classification tier.
Navy PRT classification tiers
| Tier | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Outstanding | Highest tier . well above standards |
| Excellent | Above standards |
| Good | Meets standards with margin |
| Satisfactory | Meets minimum standards |
| Probationary | Below standards . failure; triggers PFA consequences |
How to improve each event
Push-Ups: Accumulate 150-250 reps daily across 5-8 clean sets. Add eccentric slow-downs once a week. Train to 2-minute test failure with controlled rest.
TRAIN PUSH-UPS
Battle Bands
3-pack resistance bands (10 to 125 lbs). Adds load for clean-rep volume training, push-up assistance work, and accessory drills you can run anywhere on ship or in barracks.
Shop Battle Bands →Plank: Daily weighted planks (add 10-25 lb on your back). Hollow-body holds, farmers carries, and deadlift-style core work. The plank is a strength test disguised as a hold.
BUILD PLANK STRENGTH
Hanging Ab Straps V2
Made in USA hanging ab straps. Build the deep core strength that holds a long plank without shaking. Hanging knee raises and L-sits translate directly to PRT plank performance.
Shop Hanging Ab Straps V2 →1.5-Mile Run: 80% easy aerobic (Zone 2), 20% intervals. 400m repeats at 5K goal pace with 90-second rests. Run a tempo mile weekly.
CRUSH YOUR RUN TIME
Hybrid Vest MK2
Weighted vest for loaded Zone 2 runs and intervals. The fastest path to a sub-9 minute pace. Run a few weeks loaded, take the vest off on test day, fly.
Shop Hybrid Vest MK2 →Row / Swim / Bike: Same principle . alternate steady-state capacity with interval sessions. Technique matters more than most Sailors think; spend time drilling form.
About this calculator
Scoring uses current Navy PRT standards (OPNAVINST 6110.1J). Actual scoring is administered through PRIMS-2 by your command. Use this for training planning and goal-setting.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the plank replacing curl-ups?
Yes. The Navy replaced curl-ups with the forearm plank in 2020. Curl-ups are no longer scored.
Can I switch cardio events?
Sailors can request an alternate cardio option (row, swim, bike) if running is not practical. Check with your command fitness leader (CFL).
What score do I need to pass?
Satisfactory or above in every event. Failing one event = failing the whole test, regardless of how high you scored on the others.
How does the PFA cycle work?
The Physical Fitness Assessment (PFA) includes BCA (Body Composition Assessment) + PRT. Both happen twice per year. Fail two PRTs in three years → administrative separation consideration.
