How the SEAL PST is scored
The Navy SEAL Physical Screening Test (PST) is the entry gate for the BUD/S pipeline. It's not just pass/fail . Naval Special Warfare Community Managers select candidates based on how far above the minimums they score. Meeting the minimum qualifies you. Competitive scores get selected.
PST Scoring Tiers
| Event | Minimum | Competitive |
|---|---|---|
| 500-Yard Swim | 12:30 | ≤ 8:00 |
| Push-Ups (2 min) | 50 | 80-100+ |
| Sit-Ups (2 min) | 50 | 80-100+ |
| Pull-Ups (dead hang) | 10 | 15-20+ |
| 1.5-Mile Run | 10:30 | ≤ 9:00 |
Candidates who miss any minimum are not eligible to attend BUD/S. Candidates who only meet the minimums are rarely selected. Plan to score at or above competitive marks on all five events.
How to improve each event
500-Yard Swim: Combat sidestroke is the preferred stroke at BUD/S. Drill technique in a pool 3-4× per week. Most candidates shave more time from form than from fitness. Train with long-blade fins for leg endurance.
Push-Ups: Daily high-volume work. 200-400 reps spread across clean sets of 25-40. Train to 2-minute failure weekly. No half-reps . BUD/S will throw them out.
TRAIN PUSH-UPS
Battle Bands
3-pack resistance bands (10 to 125 lbs). Daily clean-rep volume and assistance work. The fastest way to push the 100-rep ceiling for PST scoring.
Shop Battle Bands →Sit-Ups: Same principle . daily volume plus a weekly 2-min test. Keep hands behind the head, elbows touching thighs. Train on a soft surface to avoid tailbone fatigue.
BUILD SIT-UP CAPACITY
Hanging Ab Straps V2
Made in USA hanging ab straps. Hanging knee raises and weighted core hold work train the deep abs that survive 2 full minutes of sit-up volume.
Shop Hanging Ab Straps V2 →Pull-Ups: Dead hang, chin over bar. Build volume with greasing-the-groove (short sets throughout the day, every day). Band assistance if you're below 10. Weighted pull-ups once you're past 15.
1.5-Mile Run: Run 3-4× per week. Mix Zone-2 aerobic runs, interval workouts (400m repeats), and tempo miles. Practice in running shoes + long pants to match test conditions.
CRUSH YOUR RUN TIME
Hybrid Vest MK2
Weighted vest for loaded Zone 2 runs and intervals. Run a few weeks loaded, take the vest off on test day, sub-9 the 1.5-mile.

Frequently Asked Questions
What score do I need to actually get to BUD/S?
Minimum qualifies you for consideration. Competitive gets you selected. Most successful candidates enter BUD/S with scores well above competitive . 10:00 swim or better, 100+ push-ups and sit-ups, 20+ pull-ups, sub-9:00 run. If you're only hitting minimums, you're not ready yet.
Does the PST apply to SWCC too?
Yes. SWCC (Special Warfare Combatant-Craft Crewman) candidates take the same PST. Competitive scores differ slightly but the test is identical.
Do I have to take the PST more than once?
Yes . PST is used for initial qualification, re-validation before BUD/S Prep, and again before BUD/S itself. Your scores must hold.
Can women take the SEAL PST?
Yes. As of 2016, all U.S. military combat roles are open to women. PST standards are gender-neutral.
What if I fail one event?
Failure on any event means the overall PST is failed. You'll typically get another attempt but scoring below minimum on multiple tests reduces your candidate competitiveness significantly.
