USMC CFT MANUF Strategy: The Moves That Cut Your Time

Battle Bunker April 14, 2026 2 min read

MANUF is the most technical event on the CFT. Combat-style obstacle course with casualty drag, serpentine sprints, low-crawl, ammo-can carry, and fireman's carry. Max score is 2:14. Most Marines finish in the 3:00-3:30 range — technique, not fitness, is the main gap.

Course Layout (75 Yards Each Way)

  • Sprint + drop + serpentine — decisive ground covered fast
  • Casualty drag — grab a 165-lb dummy, reverse-drag 10 yards
  • Fireman's carry — hoist the dummy, carry 75 yards
  • Ammo-can carry — two 30-lb cans, 75 yards
  • Serpentine return — weave between cones, grenade throw
  • Final sprint + crawl

The 4 Moves That Save Time

1. Efficient casualty drag setup: Marines waste 3-5 seconds positioning the dummy. Practice the grip — reverse-drag, low hips, aggressive pulls.

2. Fireman's carry hoist: The hoist kills more Marines than the carry. Keep the dummy close, hip-hinge as you drive up. Don't deadlift-up and then squat-down.

3. Ammo-can running form: Chest up, short fast steps, cans close to your body. Marines who carry long-arm waste energy and slow down.

4. Serpentine efficiency: Don't round the cones. Cut hard, plant the outside foot, drive with the inside foot. Rugby runners take this for granted — soldiers don't.

Training Week

MANUF prep is anaerobic capacity + functional strength + positional drills.

Monday — Strength + carries:

  • Deadlifts 5x3 heavy
  • Sandbag over shoulder 4x25 yards
  • Farmer carries 5x40m heavy

Wednesday — Anaerobic intervals:

  • 30-second max-effort sprints, 6 rounds, 1:1 rest
  • Shuttle runs: 5x 40-yard shuttles, full recovery

Friday — Full MANUF practice:

  • 2 full MANUF attempts with 5-min rest
  • Technique focus: one slow-motion walkthrough, two at full speed

Casualty Drag Drills

Use a weighted sled, sandbag, or heavy-duty prowler at 120-165 lb. Reverse drag for 15-yard intervals, 5-6 rounds, 30 second rest. Drill the grip.

Fireman's Carry Drills

Two-man drills: your partner is your dummy. Practice the hoist cold-to-carry and cold-to-drop. The hoist must be trained separately before you drill it during a conditioning session.

Mental Model

MANUF is won with pacing and technique, not raw speed. Marines who go 100% on the initial sprint blow up at the casualty drag. Marines who move precise and aggressive finish 15 seconds faster than Marines who just "try harder."

Target Times

Under 2:40 is solid. Under 2:30 is competitive. Under 2:20 is elite. Cut 30 seconds in a 6-week block by drilling technique 2-3x per week — most Marines gain more from form than from fitness.
