Firefighter CPAT Test: The 8 Events, Standards, and How to Prepare
The CPAT, or Candidate Physical Ability Test, is the standardized fitness test you have to pass to become a firefighter at most departments in the country. It is not a normal gym test. You run it in a 50-pound vest that simulates turnout gear, and you have just 10 minutes and 20 seconds to finish all eight events. Here is exactly what is on it and how to train so test day is not a surprise.
What is the CPAT?
The CPAT is a single, continuous, pass or fail course of eight job-related events. You wear a 50-pound weighted vest the entire time to simulate firefighter protective equipment, and for the first event you add another 25 pounds to mimic carrying a hose pack. There is no point score. You either complete all eight events inside the 10:20 time limit without a disqualifying error, or you do not pass.
The 8 CPAT events
- Stair Climb: three minutes on a step machine at a set pace wearing the vest plus an extra 25 pounds. The added weight comes off when the climb ends.
- Hose Drag: drag a charged hose line a set distance, then drop to a knee and pull it in hand over hand.
- Equipment Carry: take two saws from a cabinet, carry them a set distance, and return them.
- Ladder Raise and Extension: raise a ladder hand over hand, then extend the fly section by pulling a rope.
- Forcible Entry: strike a measuring device with a sledgehammer until it travels the required distance.
- Search: crawl through a dark, confined tunnel with turns and obstacles.
- Rescue: grab and drag a 165-pound mannequin a set distance.
- Ceiling Breach and Pull: push up a hinged ceiling device and pull it down with a pike pole for repeated sets.

The load is the whole game
Most candidates who fail are not weak. They are unprepared for moving in 50 pounds for ten straight minutes. The added weight changes your balance, your breathing, and how fast you gas out. If you have only ever trained without load, the CPAT will feel like a different sport.
How to train for the CPAT
Train the way you will test: under load. Wear a weighted vest for stair climbing, step-ups, carries, and brisk incline walking to build the exact engine the CPAT demands. Add grip work for the hose pull and ceiling breach, and build work capacity with circuits that keep your heart rate high across several movements without rest. Practicing under load also teaches you to pace, which is how you beat the clock without redlining on event two.

Hybrid Weight Vest MK2
The CPAT lives or dies on moving in 50 pounds. The Hybrid Weight Vest MK2 lets you train stairs, carries, and circuits under real load so test day feels familiar.
