How this calculator works
Your reading is compared against the 25th, 50th, and 75th percentile reference values for your age group and sex from Statistics Canada's grip strength reference data (Wong, Health Reports, 2016, Canadian Health Measures Survey 2007 to 2013). The calculator interpolates between those published points, so treat the output as an estimate of where you sit, not a clinical measurement.
Protocol matters
The reference data was collected with a Smedley dynamometer, standing, arm extended. Seated Jamar protocols usually read a little lower. Whatever you use, test the same way every time: three squeezes per hand, about 60 seconds rest between, best reading counts. Full details and the printed chart are in our average grip strength by age guide.
Why grip is worth tracking
In the PURE study of roughly 140,000 adults published in The Lancet, every 5 kg of lower grip strength was associated with a 16 percent higher risk of death from any cause. That is an association, not a cause, but it makes grip one of the cheapest health markers you can measure and train.

What is a good grip strength for my age?
At or above the 75th percentile for your age and sex is a practical definition of strong. For a man in his thirties that is roughly 52 kg. For a woman in the same range it is roughly 31 kg. The median puts you in the stronger half.
Is this a medical assessment?
No. It is a fitness comparison against published population reference values. Clinical screening uses different cutoffs (EWGSOP2 flags below 27 kg in men and 16 kg in women in older adults) and belongs with a clinician.
How do I test without a dynamometer?
Timed dead hangs and farmers carries track the same quality for training purposes, though they do not map onto these percentiles. Our dead hang guide has benchmarks by level.
