How the waist to height ratio works

Under the December 2025 DoD directive on military fitness standards, all branches screen body composition with one number: waist circumference divided by height. The allowable limit is below 0.55. Screening happens twice per year.

Ratio What it means
Below 0.50 In standard with margin. Generally associated with lower health risk.
0.50 to 0.549 In standard, but inside the watch zone. Small waist changes matter here.
0.55 and above Above the DoD limit. Referred to a secondary body fat assessment (the Army uses the one-site abdominal tape under AR 600-9).

How to measure your waist correctly

Stand relaxed, arms at your sides. Place the tape horizontally around your abdomen at the level of the navel. The tape should be snug without compressing the skin. Measure after a normal exhale. For consistency with Army procedure, take three measurements and use the average.

The fitness exemption

Soldiers who score 465 or higher on the Army Fitness Test with at least 80 points in every event are considered compliant with body composition standards regardless of the tape. Project your score with our AFT calculator.

Frequently Asked Questions

Did the military really get rid of height and weight tables?

Yes. Effective January 1, 2026, DoD guidance replaced the screening tables with the waist-to-height ratio across every branch. Height and weight are still recorded, but the ratio is the pass/fail screen.

What happens if my ratio is 0.55 or higher?

You are not automatically out of standard. You move to a secondary body fat assessment. In the Army that is the one-site abdominal circumference tape under AR 600-9. Exceed the body fat standard there and you enter the Army Body Composition Program.

What is a good waist to height ratio?

General health guidance is to keep your waist under half your height, a ratio below 0.50. The military limit of 0.55 sits above that, so treat 0.50 to 0.55 as a warning zone, not a comfort zone.

How fast can I lower my ratio?

A sustainable fat loss rate moves the waist roughly half an inch to an inch per month. Read the full playbook in our Army height and weight standards guide and our guide to weighted vest walking.
