Marine Corps Height and Weight Standards 2026: What Changed and How to Stay in Standard

Battle Bunker July 22, 2026 5 min read

The Marine Corps height and weight standards that generations of Marines memorized are gone. As of January 1, 2026, the Corps no longer screens body composition with a height and weight table at all. Instead, every Marine is screened twice a year on a single number, the waist-to-height ratio. The change came down from the Department of Defense, but the Marine Corps implementation is stricter than the joint standard, so it pays to know exactly how the new system works.

What Changed in 2026

Under DoD guidance issued in a December 18, 2025 memo on military fitness standards, all services replaced their height and weight screening tables with a waist-to-height ratio (WHtR) assessment effective January 1, 2026. The department-wide screening benchmark is a ratio below 0.55.

The Marine Corps went further. MARADMIN 066/26, released February 26, 2026 and retroactively effective to January 1, 2026, sets the USMC screening standard at a waist-to-height ratio of 0.52 or less, tighter than the Pentagon's 0.55 requirement. The screen applies to all Marines, active and reserve, and runs semiannually.

Body composition was not the only change. Under MARADMIN 613/25, Marines holding combat arms primary MOSs now take the PFT under sex-neutral scoring, using the male age-normed tables with a minimum score of 210. Non-combat arms Marines keep the existing sex- and age-normed scoring. We cover those changes in detail in our USMC fitness standards guide linked below.

How the Waist-to-Height Screen Works

The math is simple: waist circumference divided by height, both in the same units. Per the Marine Corps procedure, the waist is measured at the navel with a self-tensioning tape, taken twice by a same-sex evaluator, and height is rounded down to the nearest half inch.

A Worked Example

Take a Marine who stands 70 inches (5 feet 10 inches). The maximum passing waist is 70 x 0.52 = 36.4 inches. If that Marine tapes a 34 inch waist, the ratio is 34 / 70 = 0.486, comfortably in standard. At a 37 inch waist, the ratio climbs to 0.529 and the Marine fails the screen and moves to a body fat assessment. What Happens at 0.52 or Above

Failing the screen is not an automatic body composition violation. A Marine above 0.52 moves to a secondary body fat assessment, and passing it clears the record. Two methods are authorized: the familiar multi-site circumference tape test or bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA). Passing either one counts, and the Corps has said BIA will replace the tape test entirely once the equipment reaches all units.

The body fat standards themselves are age-normed, ranging from 18 to 26 percent for men and 26 to 36 percent for women. A Marine who exceeds the applicable body fat limit is enrolled in the Body Composition Program (BCP), which brings mandatory remediation, monthly evaluations, and potential administrative consequences for Marines who fail to make progress.

Fitness-Based Allowances for High Performers

Performance still buys slack, up to a hard ceiling. Under MARADMIN 066/26, Marines who score 285 or higher on both the PFT and CFT are allowed body fat up to the maximum of 26 percent for men and 36 percent for women. The existing allowance for Marines scoring 250 or higher on both tests also remains, adding 1 percent to the age-normed limit, never exceeding those same maximums. No score exempts a Marine from the body fat caps themselves; exceed 26 or 36 percent and BCP processing follows regardless of fitness scores. If you are chasing those thresholds, our Marine Corps PFT calculator shows exactly what each event needs to score.

How to Stay in Standard

A waist measurement responds to two things: body fat and time. The Marines who never worry about the tape are the ones who treat waist management as a year-round habit, not a 30-day panic before the semiannual screen.

Train for a Smaller Waist

  • Prioritize daily low-intensity volume. Brisk walking, rucking, and easy runs burn fat without wrecking recovery, so you can still hit hard PFT and CFT sessions.
  • Lift heavy two to four days per week. Muscle raises your resting energy burn and keeps weight loss coming from fat, not strength.
  • Add two conditioning sessions. Intervals, hill sprints, or circuits push calorie burn and directly improve your run and MANUF times.

Cut Fat Without Crash Dieting

Crash diets before a weigh-in are exactly the wrong play now, because the tape does not care about water weight the way a scale does. Aim for a modest deficit of roughly 300 to 500 calories per day, keep protein high to protect muscle, and expect to lose about half a percent to one percent of body weight per week. That pace typically trims the waist steadily without tanking PFT performance, and it holds after the measurement instead of rebounding.

FAQ

What is the Marine Corps waist-to-height ratio limit in 2026?

The Marine Corps standard is a waist-to-height ratio of 0.52 or less, set by MARADMIN 066/26 and effective January 1, 2026. That is stricter than the DoD-wide benchmark of below 0.55 that applies across the services.

Did the Marine Corps get rid of the tape test?

The single-site neck and waist tape method is no longer the primary screen. The WHtR measurement at the navel replaced it. The multi-site tape test survives as one of two secondary body fat assessments alongside BIA, and the Corps plans for BIA to replace taping once equipment is fielded to all units.

What happens if I fail the waist-to-height screen?

You move to a body fat assessment by multi-site tape or BIA, and passing either method clears you. If your body fat exceeds the age-normed limit, you are processed into the Body Composition Program.

Do high PFT and CFT scores give me extra allowance?

Yes. Scoring 285 or higher on both the PFT and CFT allows body fat up to 26 percent for men and 36 percent for women, and scoring 250 or higher on both adds 1 percent to your age-normed limit. Nothing exempts you from the absolute caps.
