Hyrox Gyms in San Diego: Where to Train for Your Next Race (2026)

Battle Bunker August 3, 2026 9 min read

Short answer: the strongest officially affiliated options in San Diego are Fitness Quest 10 in Scripps Ranch, CrossFit ATR in Mission Valley, and Mighty Fit SD near Old Town. For coverage across the county, NXPT Fitness Studio runs Hyrox classes at four locations. For a beach-side club built around the race format, Pier Athletics Club in Pacific Beach. For a large downtown facility, Invictus Fitness in East Village.

I have raced Hyrox seven times as a pro athlete, and the question I get most from Southern California is some version of "where do I actually train for this?" Hyrox is not a workout you can improvise. It demands a SkiErg, a rower, a sled you can push on a real surface, wall balls, sandbags, and enough floor space to walk 100 meters of lunges. Most commercial gyms have two of those six things.

San Diego has gotten better on this front, and it is about to get busier. HYROX has announced its first San Diego race, listed on the official event page for May 13 to 16, 2027. Local gyms are already programming for it.

A note on "official affiliate" versus "Hyrox-style"

This distinction matters and most directories blur it. An official HYROX Training Club pays for affiliation, gets the HYROX Performance Hub programming library, and can market under the HYROX name. A gym running Hyrox-style conditioning classes is not necessarily worse, but it is not the same thing. Below I state what each gym claims about itself on its own site. Where a gym makes no official claim, I say so.

Hyrox gyms in San Diego

Fitness Quest 10

Area: Scripps Ranch, at the FQ10 North facility on Scripps Poway Parkway.
Status: States on its own site that it is an Official HYROX Training Club.

FQ10 runs certified HYROX classes on Sunday mornings under a HYROX-certified coach, split into four tracks: Foundational, Engine for aerobic capacity, Power for moving load under fatigue, and Complete for race-specific work. That is more structure than most affiliates offer, and they host in-house race simulations. Best for North County athletes who want a periodized approach rather than one hard class a week. Included in membership, with a drop-in rate for non-members. fitnessquest10.com

CrossFit ATR

Area: Mission Valley, plus a Kearny Mesa location.
Status: States on its own site that it is a certified HYROX Affiliate.

ATR runs a 75 minute Endurance plus HYROX class on Sunday mornings at the Mission Valley box on Mission Gorge Road. Coming from a CrossFit background, the sled, rower, SkiErg, and wall ball infrastructure is already in place, which a dedicated Hyrox studio has to buy from scratch. Best for CrossFitters who want a longer cardio grind, and anyone in the Mission Valley or Kearny Mesa corridor. Free for unlimited members, drop-ins available. crossfitatr.com

Mighty Fit SD

Area: Hancock Street, between Old Town and the Midway District.
Status: States on its own site that it is an official Hyrox affiliate with access to Hyrox daily workouts and early event access.

Mighty Fit is primarily a private-access gym capped at 75 members, open 4am to 10pm daily, with Concept2 rowers and SkiErgs, C2 and Assault bikes, a full rig, boxes, vests, and kettlebells. It also runs an Intro to Hyrox small-group class on Thursday mornings, capped at 12. Best for self-programmed athletes following a written plan who want equipment access without a crowd. Private access is $89 per month, unlimited classes $149, single class credits $20. mightyfitsd.com

NXPT Fitness Studio

Area: Kearny Mesa, La Mesa, Chula Vista, and Santee.
Status: States on its own site, "NXPT is a HYROX affiliate."

The widest geographic net in the county. Hyrox and event training runs Tuesday and Thursday evenings at Kearny Mesa, Santee, and Chula Vista, and Wednesday evenings in La Mesa, with monthly full race simulations. Their spin and run studios give you somewhere real to build the running half of the race. Best for East County and South Bay athletes. The monthly simulations are the draw here. Running a full simulation before race day is the highest-value session in a Hyrox build, and most gyms never do one. nxptfit.com

Pier Athletics Club

Area: Pacific Beach, on Garnet Avenue.
Status: Describes itself as a Hyrox affiliate on its own social channels and appears as an official training club in third-party Hyrox directories. I could not pull a written affiliate statement off its own website, which runs as a booking app, so confirm this one when you call.

PAC is a newer hybrid club built around Hyrox performance training, HIIT, and hybrid strength, with programming that rotates through race simulations. Turf, modern equipment, cold plunge and red light recovery on site. Best for beach-area athletes who want a purpose-built Hyrox environment rather than a CrossFit box that added a Sunday class. pierathletics.club

Invictus Fitness

Area: East Village, downtown San Diego.
Status: Runs Hyrox-focused training. Invictus does not state official HYROX affiliate status on its Hyrox program page, so I am not calling it one.

One of the most respected competitive training gyms in the country, with a 15,000 square foot San Diego headquarters and two separate training rooms. It publishes an eight-week Hyrox program with beginner and advanced tracks delivered through a training app, alongside in-person hybrid and engine programming. Best for downtown athletes who want coaching from a staff with a deep competitive record. invictusfitness.com

CrossFit Humanity

Area: Midway District, on Pacific Highway.
Status: Runs Hyrox-focused training. Its Hyrox page markets a dedicated program but does not state official affiliate status, so I am describing it as Hyrox-focused rather than affiliated.

Humanity has been marketing Hyrox training in San Diego since 2023, which makes it one of the earliest movers locally. Structured classes, race simulations, and coaching, plus a paid trial session that includes a consultation and movement assessment. Drop-ins are $30 per day. Best for beginners who want a low-commitment way to find out whether they like this style of training. crossfithumanity.com

What to look for in a Hyrox gym

Ignore the branding for a minute. Walk the floor and check for these six things, because they are what the race actually tests.

  • SkiErg. Station one, 1,000 meters, and the most commonly missing machine in American gyms. No SkiErg means you cannot train the opening station.
  • Sled push and sled pull. Not just a sled, but a surface and a lane long enough to use it. Hyrox runs 50 meters of pushing and 50 of pulling on turf. A sled on rubber matting in a 15 meter lane will not prepare you for the friction or the pacing.
  • Rower. Easy. Almost every functional gym has Concept2 rowers.
  • Wall balls. Check target height. Men throw to 10 feet, women to 9. One target height is a problem.
  • Sandbags. A bag at your race weight and a lane to walk 100 meters of lunges.
  • Farmers carry. Kettlebells or dedicated handles, plus open floor.

The SkiErg and the sled lane are what eliminate most gyms. Everything else is common. Ask about those two specifically on your tour, and ask whether members can use them outside class time. One Sunday class is not enough volume on its own.

Training for Hyrox without a Hyrox gym

You do not need an affiliate to get race ready. I have done plenty of my own preparation in a garage. What you need is a plan and a set of honest substitutes.

Athlete performing heavy walking sandbag lunges down a turf lane in a functional fitness gym

The runs: half the race is 8km of running, and San Diego is one of the best running cities in the country. Do your compromised running outdoors and stop worrying about it.

Sled push and pull: the best home substitute is a heavy sandbag drag on grass or turf using a strap, or a tire sled. Bear hug carries and short heavy walking intervals build the same quad and calf tolerance. You are training sustained horizontal force production at a heart rate you cannot control.

SkiErg: no perfect substitute exists. Banded straight-arm pulldowns for volume, heavy rope work, and rowing intervals for the aerobic cost get you close. Get on a real SkiErg a few times before race day so the movement is not brand new.

Sandbag lunges: train these exactly as written, because you can. One bag at race weight covers this station and the farmers carry pattern, which is why it is the highest return piece of equipment you can own for Hyrox and why I built our line of training sandbags the way I did. Our guide to the best sandbag exercises and routines covers the progressions.

Wall balls: a medicine ball and tape on a wall at 9 or 10 feet.

Pair the substitutes with real structure. Our Hyrox training plan lays out a beginner build week by week, and inside the final month, work through the race day preparation guide so you are not improvising your taper, fueling, and pacing in the last 72 hours.

Frequently asked questions

Do you need a Hyrox affiliate gym to train for Hyrox?

No. Affiliation gives a gym official programming and marketing rights, not a monopoly on results. Plenty of athletes qualify for the World Championships out of ordinary gyms and garages. What you need is access to a SkiErg and a sled at some point in your build, a plan that progresses compromised running, and consistency. An affiliate makes that easier and puts you around people doing the same work, which is worth real money in adherence terms. It is a convenience and community advantage, not a requirement.

How much does Hyrox training cost in San Diego?

Mighty Fit SD publishes $89 per month for private gym access, $149 per month for unlimited classes plus access, and $20 for a single class credit or $150 for a ten-pack. Drop-in rates at the class-based gyms cluster around $25 to $30 per session, with CrossFit Humanity listing $30 per day and Fitness Quest 10 listing $30 for non-members. CrossFit ATR includes its Hyrox class free with an unlimited membership. Full memberships at the class-based boxes run higher, so call for current rates rather than trusting any directory, including this one.

Is Hyrox coming to San Diego?

Yes. HYROX has announced its first San Diego event, listed on the official event page for May 13 to 16, 2027, with the venue still to be confirmed. That is a major reason local gyms have been adding Hyrox programming, and it means the affiliate gyms above will get busy well before race weekend.

How far out should I start training at a Hyrox gym?

Twelve to sixteen weeks is the sweet spot for a first race if you already have a base of general fitness. Eight weeks works if you are running consistently. Under six weeks, shift the goal from a time target to finishing well and spend your limited sessions on the sled and the sandbag lunges, which is where undertrained athletes lose the most time. Whatever your window, schedule at least one full race simulation two to three weeks out.
