Lifting Straps vs Lifting Hooks: Which Should You Use for Heavy Pulls?
Lifting straps and lifting hooks solve the same basic problem: your grip gives out before the target muscle does. They go about it in very different ways, and the right pick depends on what you lift and why. Here is how they compare.
How lifting straps work
A lifting strap is a length of fabric that wraps around your wrist and then around the bar. You cinch it tight, and the strap, not just your fingers, holds the load. Straps still ask your hands and forearms to do work, so they keep building grip while letting you push past the point where your grip would normally quit.
How lifting hooks work
A lifting hook is a rigid metal or composite hook attached to a wrist support. The bar rests in the hook, so your fingers barely have to close at all. Hooks take grip almost entirely out of the equation, which makes them popular with lifters who have hand injuries or who want to overload a muscle with minimal grip involvement.
Straps vs hooks: the trade-offs
- Grip development: Straps still train your grip to a degree. Hooks remove it almost completely.
- Security: Hooks latch on fast and suit high-rep work. Straps hold extremely well once wrapped, but the wrap takes practice.
- Versatility: Straps work for deadlifts, rows, shrugs, pulldowns, and carries. Hooks shine on pulls and rows but feel awkward on some movements.
- Comfort: Padded straps spread pressure across the wrist. Hooks can dig in under very heavy loads.
- Learning curve: Hooks are nearly plug and play. Straps reward a few minutes of practice with a more natural feel.
Which should you use?
For most lifters, straps are the better long-term tool. They give you the grip help you need on heavy pulls while keeping your hands in the game, and they carry over to far more exercises. Hooks make sense if you are rehabbing a hand or grip injury, or if you want to fully isolate your back without any grip fatigue.
If you are buying one pair to cover almost everything, go with a quality padded strap.
